REWRITE REFLECTION TASK 2B

HER

In this reflection, I’ll give some information about the film which I really love, enjoy, and also try to develop empathy while watching, ‘’HER’’.  I love this film so much and strongly suggest you to watch if you don’t yet. This film tells the story of a man who has a relationship with an operating system which is designed with artificial intelligence to adopt and evolve. It was written, directed, and produced by Spike Jonze. It  was proadcasted in 2013 in science fiction, romantic comedy, drama. It has many awards including Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay,Golden Globe Award for Best Screenplay, Writers' Guild of America for Best Original Screenplay, Academy Awards for Best Pictures, National Board of Review Awards for Best Film and Best Director. This film was also included in the list of the ten films of 2013 by National American Film Institute. In this film, director wants to show the feelings of a man at the edge of divorse, in the seek of someone to share his lonelines by discussing and questioning the meaning of love and life. I really like the way he reflect the feelings of the main character, Theodore. In the film, when he buys the operating system, Theodor chooses the voice of it as a female voice, and the all advanture begins. After for a while, they begin to be able to do everything together with the help of headphones and a little camera that enables the system to see and hear everything they do, everywhere they go. The operating system, Samantha (as named by herself) effects him so deeply with her intellegence and ability to understand the emotions and develop herself in an increadible speed in contrast to his expectations that Theodore falls in love with her in spite of his ever never being able to touch her. The director reflects the feeling of both Samantha and Theodore and the dilemmas they live about whether the love they have is real or not. perfectly. In the first scenes of the movie, the director tries to mention that with the fast developing technology, people begin to be more lonely, and he also emphasize during the film that people try to remove their loneliness even with lifeless things by virtual ways.

REWRITE REFLECTION TASK 1A

Hi everybody!

My name is Fatma, I’m from Antalya, I was born in 20 July 1995, in Antalya.  I’m a first degree  student in  Faculty of Language Education department at METU. This is my second year in METU. I was at preparatory  school last year and it was a big chance for me to both to adopt to the campus life and to develop myself academically. I’ve graduated from Türkler I.M.K.B. Anatolia Teacher Training High School in Alanya. Our class was the least populated one throughout its history, we’re only seven! It was both a advantage and disadvantage for us. We had to participate in each lesson  actively unlike the other classes, but in case of any unwillingness towards to any lesson, it was very easy to break it up, because it was also easy to constitute a majority. I stayed at dormitory during my high school time. We made a lot of increadible memories along these years both good and bad, but I think they all made me more experienced and conscient person in interpersonal relations. Besides these, I also want to talk about my hobbies, or rather than hobbies, the things I enjoy doing; because there is nothing regarded as hobby that I do continuously . I like swimming or any other activities relateted to sea, but it’s impossible in Ankara to do it. However, last year, I had a chance to have a similar experience, I went to Blue Lake with my friends and rode paddle boat. On the other hand, in the past, I was in marching band for 6 years both in primary school and high school. In addition, I was also in folklore group in primary school for 2 years.

TEXTUAL ANALYSIS

A husband and wife in China are seeking new homes for more than 50 cats and dogs, after spending their life savings looking after the animals.

Hu Fengduan and his wife live alongside the pets in a flat measuring just 20 sq m (215 sq ft), the China News Service reports.  The animals are former strays which the couple took in from the streets of Chengdu, in the southwestern province of Sichuan. It started 10 years ago with the rescue of a cat who was stuck on a roof, Mr Hu is quoted as saying on the NetEase web portal. Since then, more animals have joined the household, and are now costing the couple 3,000 yuan ($485; £320) each month. His wife, a former nurse, looks after the animals' health herself because veterinary appointments are too expensive.
Mr Hu, a former gemstone appraiser who currently works as a street vendor, says their money has run out, and the pets need new homes. "We've spent all of our savings to raise them. I'm hoping more warm-hearted people can help us by adopting some of the pets," he says. "We don't want any money but only ask people to be good to the animals." In 2011, a former chef made the news for looking after 140 stray dogs at his home near the Chinese city of Wuhan. He was supported by people's donations, which helped to cover food costs.

CHALENGİNG WORDS
Stray: başıboş, kaybolmuş
Quote:  fiyatlandırmak
Gemstone: kıymetli taş, cevher
Appraiser: muhammin, değer/paha biçen kimse
Vendor:  satıcı

The news is kind of an announcement which says that the Fengduon couple is looking for volunteer people to take care the animals they gathered from the street without any fee, since the cost of animals’ care is a bit too much compared to thier income. The writer commanly uses simple present and present continuous tense to refer to regular, repeated, habitual actions except the part where he uses past tense to decribe the background in the story and in the part where tells situation that is not directly connected to a definite past time but stil occuring in the present. (More animals’ve joined…, their money has run out…, we’ve spent… )He wrote this news in an objective tone. He doesn’t reflects his emotions about the situation, or evaluate the Fengduon couple.

REFLECTION TASK 2A

THE POWER OF CELEBRITIES AND MEDIA

In this reflection,  I want to share my ideas about the power the celebrities have to affect other people to do something or not to. To begin with, it is an undeniable fact that with the help of social media and improved communication technologies, it’s now much more easier to reach wide mass, but the most important point is whether it is used  for a good purpose or for the purpose of showing off or satisfying some well-known people’s  egos. Therefore I want to discuss this topic and try to give some clear explanations as much as I can. In my opinion, the sharings or the acts of these well-known people should be given much more attantion than any other person’s while being done so, because they are one of the most efffective examples in the society. The mass media and other constitutions spreading these have also a big responsibility in making up the agenda topic and informing the people. Only the power social media has is enough to start a great movement as seen in the examples of selfie taken at the Oscars or in the ice bucket challenge.  After these, a great number of people began to do so, and these movements got bigger and bigger day by day. That’s why, not only the ones doing it, but also the tools spreading it have the power, and by informing the public about nonsense or useless things, they encourage society unwittingly to follow it. On the other hand, some are also in the opinion that the public should be informed about everything the celebrities do for the reason that they are famous. However, at a point, the celebrities are in a position that directing the public, and spreading every detail of their acts regardless of whether it’s proper or not, may result in negative outcomes in the society or the people’s behaviors following them. The essential point here is that, the responsibility belongs to both celebrities and the media. For celebrities, it is important to set a good example for the society to prevent any possible misbehaviors  and be careful about what they are encouraging people to do. In addition to this, media also should be selective in broadcasting to the public.

4) The Aging Population

The number of men and women in the US aged 60 or over still in work has been rising for more than a decade. Economists have given a number of reasons for this trend. First, since 1985, the US economy has been expanding so there has been an inreased demand for labour,. At the same time, the cost of some services, such as health care, has increased so workers need to earn more money in later life. In addition, changes in social securety benefits and rules have had a considerable effect on labour patterns. First, in 1977 and 1983 changes to the Social Security Act raised the full-benefit age from 65 to 67 and introduce other changes that make delaying retirement more attravtive. Then, in 1986 the Age Discrimination Act ended cumposary retirement for all workers, allowing them to work later in life. Changes to pension laws have encouraged workers to stay in employment longer, as this gives them more chances of a larger pension when they retire.

SOME EXERCISES FROM THE BOOK

       EXERCISE 2

        Hi everyone,
I'm having problems getting a new phone connection here, so instead of sending e-mails, I actually sit down to write a letter.
I imagine you will be suprised to get this as I've never been much of letter-writer. I'm putting the return address in big letters at the top, because to tell you the truth I've began to feel quite lonely here.
Well, perhaps I don't mean that exactly. There are plenty of people here for me to talk to. In fact, I'm settling in to the student life quite well, but I don't really know anyone yet. I've got a room in a house a long way from the collage, and seem to spend a long time on the bus. A lot of students are cycling , so I'm trying to find a cheap bike, and so I'm also thinking of moving nearer to collage when I can find somewhere. Sorry-an interruption, someone's knocking at the door. More later. Later. One of the girls downstairs is having a party, and I'm invited. And the phone line has been fixed, so I expect you'll get an e-mail from me very soon! In fact, I'm considering tearing up this letter, so just ignore everything I've said...

     EXERCISE 3

EUROPEAN TRAFFIC ACCIDENT RATES FAIL TO MEET TARGETS

Although the number of deaths caused in trafic accidents in the EU ia going down , experts are still trying to find ways of reducing the number throughout the UE to around 25.000 fatalities per year by 2010. Trafic safeyt is improving , but experts believe that achieveing the 2010 goal will prove difficult. Recent statis show that in 2005, in the EU 41.600 people were killed in the road accidents. Although progress has been made most experts agree that this figure will have fallen to only around 32.000 by 2010 which means that the EU target will be missed by about 7.000. On the other hand, as the amount of trafic is increasing, it is possible to argue that the situation is not as bad as it looks. However, one interprets the statics It remains true that as the time goes on. It's  becoming harder and harder to reduce the figures, especially since accident-reduction schemes costs a lot of money. Many countries have tried and failed to reduce the number of accidents, and in the UE, as whole, only Sweden's pursuing the the goal of zero accidents. Accident reduction is more difficult in building new roads and in introducing safety measures at a fast enough rate. To complicate matters, most new members have very little expeerience in dealing with the emands of heavy traffic. Experts suggest that any safety programme must also set about changing the way drivers behave. Despite what people often say it seems to be younger generation that causes most accidents. In line with this research, many countries are introducing tougher driving tests, and are concentrating on the main causes of accidents: speed, reckless overtaking, alchol and over concidence.

A burgler tries to break into a big housein the country. He walks very quitely across the garden when he hears a voice:''Big brother is watching you!'' He turns around but he doesn't see anything. So he creeps nearer to house. Suddenly he hears the voice again and he sees a cage hanging from a tree. A parrot is sitting in the cage.     EXERCISE 8

STUDENTS NOW TAKING LONGER TO FINISH STUDIES

In the USAsome university students nowadays are spending more and more time in university before graduating. In American universities, many students are paying/pays their own fees, and this means more time working and lless time studying. Alan Chester is a 25 year old journalism student from Ohio takes 6 year to coplete his undergraduate degree. In order to pay tutition fees and other expenses he work 4 days a week in a university kitchen, while in the university holidays, he does a full-time job. 'I find it difficultat the moment to study and pay my bills at the same time,'' he admits ''but, I'm trying my best and I managed to keep thewolf from the door.'' Allan's parrents understand his decision to take longer to graduate. ''Thet know what I'm going through, and they help me as much as they can. It's hard, but I'm learning/learn to look after myself , and I'm experiencing/experience stuff that might help be useful one day when I'm a journalist.'' He points out that some students are taking/takes more time to graduate because they don't really know what they want to study. ' New courses of study develeops all the time. New subjects appear on the curriculum. Ome students spenr-d time experimenting with different courses before choosing their major. So it is not all about money. I thint universities are going through a period of change like everything else, and students heve to adopt to this changin situation.'

                                                     Animal Care in Zoos

The earliest known zoo was the Park of Intelligence in the province of Hunan. It was started by a Chinese ruler about 1150 B.C. Today zoo facilities are limited and zookeepers cannot keep every animal on display year-round. In the winter in colder climates, most birds must be bought indoors, but zookeepers cannot always keep each bird on view for the public. Many visitors are suprised to see that some animals remain outside all year. Penguins, polar bears and timber wolves are happy outdoors in wintertime. Some animals are always indoors in northern areas; reptiles and small desert animals always have indoor displays. Zookepers must provide indoor shelters for large animals such as elephants. How large those shelters must be! Today zoologists understand much more about animal behavior and zoos are being designed that are similar to the animals' natural habitats. Viewers can closely observe animals at animal parks, animals roam free. Zoo kitchens keep a wide variety of foods, and these foods are used to prepare meals that meet animals' nutritional needs. Zoos contribute to wildlife conservation, and they nurture species that are in danger of becoming extinct.
